The Silent Threat to Coastlines

As coastal populations increase, so does the rate of coastal development. With increased development comes an increase in the rate of shoreline armoring, or the modification of shorelines by humans in order to prevent erosion and reduce wave energy. But, these structures can be harmful the environment. This research estimates the extent of shoreline armoring on US coasts to inform future development and sustainable decisions.
